Update: There’s growing doubts about the authenticity of this (very well done) video. The best guess at the moment is that this might be a promo for an upcoming CoD game. Your guesses in the comments please.

The FPSRussia YouTube channel has garnered itself a good reputation for providing entertaining videos based on the use of different weapons by a likable Russian. For example, his way of dealing with an Xbox 360 suffering from the Red Ring of Death (RRoD) has yet to be topped in my opinion. But his latest video is the best yet. Why? Because he’s not firing the weapons anymore–his remote controlled quadcopter named Charlene is instead.

The details of the quadrotor being used are very thin. Needless to say it’s a prototype unit either modified from a standard quadcopter or actually a work in progress for use by the military. Mounted on the front is a camera and underneath is a machine gun. The quadcopter is controlled via a tablet with the view configured to also act as a target reticule for the gun.

As you can see from his experiments firing at dummies, the accuracy is very good and using the tablet to line up shots allows him to aim and hit a bottle and a petrol can from distance.

Quadcopters aren’t known for their battery life, which can usually be counted in minutes. But then minutes may be all you need to flush out and engage the enemy. You may remember the video of U.S. troops being pinned down in Afghanistan. How would that situation of differed if they had one of these quadcopters to fly into the hills where the enemy was hiding?

Don’t expect this prototype quadcopter to ever come on the consumer market, but it should spur a few people on to equip their own non-lethal quadcopters with NERF or Airsoft machine guns.
